Don Maclean

Presenting BBC Radio 2`s religious flagship programme may seem glamorous, but having to get up in the early hours of Sunday morning to get to the studio, brings it all back down to earth. It`s particularly hard when you`ve only just slumped into bed at 2am the night before. "At least on Radio they can`t see the bags under your eyes", smiles Don Maclean, one of the BBC`s finest radio presenters. He has every right to smile of course, his programme `Good Morning Sunday` now attracts well over 2 million people each week.

Presenting `Good Morning Sunday` doesn`t always mean that Don is trapped in the studio however. Some of the most memorable programmes have come from locations around the world. This includes transmitting one programme live from the Remembrance Day celebrations in France, and another programme recorded from Bethlehem one Christmas. The most moving location was at the memorial service for the 50th Anniversary of the dropping of the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima, which was attended by several of the survivors.

Don is very much at ease in any situation that he finds himself in, and attributes much of this to his deep faith. He is concerned to be fully professional, but fully Christian too. He says its not always easy to achieve both at the same time, but he tries!

`Good Morning Sunday` apart, Don is one of Britain`s leading television and Cabaret performers. He first came to the public`s attention through his appearances on the BBC`s `Black and White Minstrel Show`, which he hosted for three years on television and five years on stage. He has starred in six royal Command Performances and appeared in twenty-eight pantomimes, several of which he wrote and Directed.

His enjoyment of squash culminates with him having won the British Celebrity Championships two years running. Don is also an experienced pilot, and flies his own aircraft regularly. This comes in particularly handy when like recently, he was in summer season on the South Coast, and needed to get back for the programme each weekend.

Don is proud of the fact that despite being surrounded by many showbiz marriages that seem to fail, he has been married to his wife, Toni for thirty years. His biography `Smiling Through` was published in 1996.

Don`s favourite Bible verse is:

The Lord is my light and my salvation; I will fear no-one. The Lord protects me from all danger; I will never be afraid. Psalm Chapter 27 verse 1.

If I`m asked to sum up what being a Christian means to me, I say it`s about never being afraid.

We live in a world that sometimes seems intent on scaring us. We can purchase an insurance policy for almost any eventuality these days, and even have insurance policies to protect claims on our insurance policies!

We have all been enveloped by fear at one time or another, and this has the effect of making us a prisoner. The little boy who is afraid of the dark, is too scared to go out of his room at night, so he stays where he is. Fear can cause us to freeze up and stop us doing what we want to do.

I know that God is always on the lookout for me, and if I pray in times of strife or danger He will be right there for me. My faith in God`s ability to protect me, and the opportunity to bring my fears before Him in prayer, are the key antidotes to fear.

What are you afraid of? rejection, sickness, uncertainty, death? We can`t overcome fear just by ignoring it. But we can overcome our fears with God`s help, as we hand over our fears to Him, we will sense that the `light of his salvation` can extinguish the darkness of fear.

Prayer:

Dear God, Thankyou for the gift of faith. Faith to know that I can trust you to uphold me when I feel fear trying to overwhelm me. Lord, Please give me the faith I had as a small child, faith that is uncluttered and simply enables me to believe in You and all your works. Amen.
